LATE
MARRIAGE
JEWISH MOTHER CONQUERS AMERICA IN SEX COMEDY
Being a Jewish mother is a state of mind that reveals itself
in the souls of all immigrant mothers. It is the symbol
of resistance, of survival, of the defense of cultural roots
and the ethnicity itself in foreign, many times inhospitable,
lands. A metaphor that naturally transfers to the Palestinian
mothers in the territories occupied by Israel, to the Turkish
in Germany, to the Italians in the United States, Portuguese
and Arabs in France etc.
Many times this symbol flourishes also in the brechtian
figure of the mother-courage among resistant impoverished
migrants in their own countries. Classic examples of this
figure in the movies: "The Mother", shot in 1927
in Soviet Russia by Vsevolod Pudovkin and, above all, Anna
Magnani in "Mamma Roma", by Pier-Paolo Pasonini,
his magnificent 1962 work.
Now comes to us the film "Late Marriage", the
debut by the Georgian descendant Israeli Dover Kosashuili,
easy to guess, about the persuasion power of a Georgian-Jewish
mother. Launched by the success in the USA, this "powerful
comedy", according to Stephen Holden, from 'The New
York Times', highlight in the selections of the festival
'New Directors/ New Films' and of the 25th São Paulo
International Film Festival, it is projected by the strong
erotic charge that fills the first half hour of its action.
The Georgian mother in "Late Marriage" follows
the role reserved to her attributes: to have her dear 32-year-old
son well married to a good family, pretty and preferentially
virgin girl. The problem in the comedy is that the son has
an affair with the divorced mother of a six-year-old girl.
The sex scenes between the two lovers were projected to
anthology category by the American critics, which considered
them to be even better than sex in porn. War is declared
so that the desire of the mother prevails above the son's
hot desires. All for the legend of the Jewish mother to
survive. And it does, very well, in this film that can't
be missed.
Read now the selection of compliments
in the American critics to the sexual behavior of the characters
in "Late Marriage":
"May be the single most believable sex scene ever captured
on film - porn included. It¹s a fucking revelation."
- Mike D¹Angelo, Time Out
"The
most important sequence in Late Marriage is a refreshingly
frank sex scene. We don¹t often see sex like this on
the screen. Watching this scene we realize that most sex
scenes in the movies play like auditions." - Roger
Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times
"The
protracted sex scene is probably the most realistic ever
depicted on film - utterly devoid of the flowery contrivances
of more romantic films, and equally lacking in the staged
raunchiness of porn." - Christy Lemire, Associated
Press
"The
frank, protracted love scene unfolds with a realistic sensuality
Hollywood has spent its entire history avoiding." -
David Ansen, Newsweek
"Perhaps
the most languidly realistic sex scene I¹ve ever seen
in a movie. The extended bedroom sequence is so intimate
and sensual and funny and psychologically self-revealing
that it makes most of what passes for sex in the movies
look like cheap hysterics." - Peter Rainer, New
York Magazine
"It
just might be the year¹s best sex scene." - Andrew
Johnston, Us Weekly
"It
will cause a stir for a love seen that is one of the longest
and most erotic, tender and passionate ever to occur in
a serious film." - Kevin Thomas, LA Times
"One
of the most original and erotic love scenes I¹ve ever
seen. It feels so real that you may never be able to watch
a Hollywood love scene again without having to stifle giggles."
- Christopher Kelly, Ft. Worth Star-Telegram
"One
of the hottest and longest sex scenes we¹ve seen in
quite a while." - V.A. Musetto, NY Post
"One
of the most truly erotic scenes in recent cinema."
- Steve Erickson, Boston Phoenix
"A
justly heralded sex scene that sets a new standard for on-screen
intimacy." - Scott Tobias, The Onion
"One
of the most affecting depictions of a love affair ever committed
to film." - Megan Turner, NY Post
