SUÍÇO DE VERÃO É UMA FESTA EM PRAÇA
GRANDE

indica que será uma das melhores safras do Festival Internacional
de Locarno, considerado o quarto no ranking mundial, do 1º
ao 11 de agosto. O Brasil não tem filme na competição
tradicional, mas concorre na competição vídeo,
uma nova categoria com prêmio equivalente ao dos filmes
em celulóide. O vídeo é de Kiko Goifman e
tem como título o número 33.
Outro filme brasileiro é "Rocha que Voa", de
Eryk Rocha, filho de Glauber Rocha, sobre os dois anos vividos
pelo grande cineasta baiano em Cuba. É uma homenagem de
filho para pai, com pesquisa sobre os manifestos políticos
de Glauber Rocha, mostrando amigos e conhecimentos da época
do exílio. O filme foi escolhido para a mostra paralela
'Semana da Crítica'.
De acordo com a diretora italiana do festival, Irene Bignardi,
entre os 900 filmes que viu, havia outros brasileiros, mas "seus
formatos não casavam com as exigências deste ano
do Festival".
Locarno, que pela primeira vez terá uma sala coberta para
o caso de noites com chuva, quando será impossível
se utilizar o telão de 300 m2 da Piazza Grande, dará
um prêmio ao produtor independente português Paulo
Branco e promoverá um debate com os escritores, cujos livros
já foram transformados em filmes. Entre eles o italiano
Antonio Tabucchi, admirador de Lisboa, com um livro sobre Fernando
Pessoa transformado em filme pelo suíço Alain Tanner.
Haverá ainda um Leopardo de Ouro, o troféu de Locarno,
para o cineasta americano Sydney Pollack, e o Dia Afegão,
com dez filmes afegãos salvos da ira dos taleban, mostrados
pela primeira vez no estrangeiro.
NOS 300 M2 DA PIAZZA GRANDE
A estréia mundial do filme "The Importance of Being
Earnest", de Oliver Parker, marcará a abertura do
Festival, na projeção ao ar livre na Piazza Grande,
no telão de 300 m2 e capaz de abrigar sete mil espectadores.
Nessa mesma praça, serão projetados 17 filmes nas
dez noites do Festival, entre eles uma versão restaurada
da comédia "O Incrível Exército de Brancaleone",
de Mario Monicelli. Além dessa retrospectiva nas sessões
ao ar livre, haverá outra, a do filme de Sidney Pollack,
"A Noite dos Desesperados/ They Shot Horses, dont´t
They?", de 1970. Os outros filmes serão estréias
mundiais ou internacionais com filmes de dez países.
Haverá 22 filmes na competição, entre eles
o de Gus van Sant "Gerry", com Matt Damon e o thriller
americano de Mark Romanek "One Hour Photo", com Robin
Williams. A Argentina está na competição
com o filme "Tan de Repente", de Diego Lerman. Há
ainda um filme chinês, sobre a situação dos
intelectuais, "Os Poetas das Galinhas/ "Chicken Poets",
de Meng Jinghui e o novo de Alex Cox ("Sid & Nanci"),
"Revengers Tragedy" (foto). O júri da competição
será presidido pelo produtor croata Cedomir Kolar, consagrado
na Mostra de São Paulo com seus filmes "Antes da Chuva",
dirigido por Milcho Manchevski, ganhador do Prêmio do Público
da 18ª Mostra e do Leão de Ouro no Festival de Veneza;
"O Filho Adotivo", seleção da 22ª
Mostra; "Trem da Vida", de Radu Mihaileanu, Prêmio
do Júri e do Público da 22a Mostra; e "Terra
de Ninguém", Prêmio do Público da 25ª
Mostra e depois Oscar 2002 de melhor filme estrangeiro.
O Festival promoverá também o chamado Verão
Indiano, com uma seleção variada de filmes indianos.

SUMMER FESTIVAL IS A PARTY ON THE LARGE SQUARE
Everything
signalizes that this will be one of the best editions
of the Locarno International Film Festival, considered
to be the fourth in the world ranking, from August
1 to 11. Brazil doesn't have any films in the traditional
competition, but runs in the video competition, a
new category granting an award equivalent to the one
that goes to celluloid films. The video by Kiko Goifman
has number 33 for its title.
Another Brazilian film is "Rocha que Voa",
by Eryk Rocha, Glauber Rocha's son, about the two
years the great Brazilian filmmaker lived in Cuba.
It is a son paying homage to his father, based on
Glauber Rocha's political manifests, showing friends
and acquaintances from the exile period. The film
was chosen by the parallel showcase 'Critics Week'.
According to the Italian director of the festival,
Irene Bignardi, among the 900 films she saw there
were other Brazilian titles, but "their format
didn't match this year Festival's demands".
Locarno, which for the first time will have a covered
theater for rainy evenings, when it will be possible
to make use of the Piazza Grande 300 m2 screen, will
award the Portuguese independent producer Paulo Branco
and will promote a debate with writers whose books
have already been made into films. Among them the
Italian Antonio Tabucchi, a Lisbon admirer, with a
book on Fernando Pessoa that was made into film by
the Swiss Alain Tanner.
There will also be a Golden Leopard, Locarno's trophy,
for the American filmmaker Sydney Pollack, and the
Afghan Day, with ten films saved from the taleban
rage, shown for the first time abroad.
ON THE PIAZZA GRANDE'S 300 M2
The world premiere of the film "The Importance
of Being Earnest", by Oliver Parker, will open
the festival, at the outdoor projection on Piazza
Grande, 300 m2 of room for seven thousand viewers.
On this same square, 17 films will be screened on
the ten evenings of the Festival, among them a restored
version of the comedy "L'Armata Brancaleone',
by Mario Monicelli. Besides the retrospective in the
outdoor sessions, there will be another, Sidney Pollack's
film, "They Shoot Horses, don´t They?",
from 1970. The other films will be world or international
premieres from ten countries.
There will be 22 films in competition, among them
Gus van Sant's "Gerry", with Matt Damon
and the American thriller by Mark Romanek "One
Hour Photo", with Robin Williams. Argentina is
competing with the film "Tan de Repente",
by Diego Lerman. There is also a Chinese film, about
the intellectuals situation, "Chicken Poets",
by Meng Jinghui and the new film by Alex Cox ("Sid
& Nanci"), "Revengers Tragedy"
(picture). The competition jury will be presided by
the Croatian producer Cedomir Kolar, well known at
the São Paulo IFF by his films "Before
the Rain", directed by Milcho Manchevski, winner
of the Audience Award at the 18th São Paulo
Festival and the Golden Lion in Venice; "The
Adopted Son", 22nd São Paulo IFF selection;
"Train de Vie", by Radu Mihaileanu, Jury
and Audience Award at the 22nd São Paulo IFF;
and "No Man's Land", Audience Award at the
25th São Paulo IFF and afterwards Best Foreign
Film at the Oscar 2002.
The Festival will also promote the so-called Indian
Summer, bringing an assorted selection of Indian films.
