DO FESTIVAL

estréia do novo filme do inglês Oliver Parker - A
importância de ser Prudente (foto) - baseado em Oscar Wilde,
abre hoje (dia 1) o 55º Festival Internacional de Cinema
de Locarno, na Suíça. A projeção -
se não chover - será na praça principal,
a Piazza Grande, num telão de 300 m2, para um público
de nove mil pessoas sentadas. Presença garantida do diretor
e o ator Rupert Everett.
Estarão em Locarno, três cineastas brasileiros -
Kiko Goifman, participando da competição vídeo
com seu documentário "33"; Eryk Rocha, mostrando
o filme Rocha que Voa, homenagem ao seu pai, o cineasta Glauber
Rocha, na mostra paralela Semana da Crítica; e Artur Omar,
também artista plástico, como membro do júri
da competição vídeo.
Outras atrações no telão da Piazza Grande
- a estréia do filme Sinais, com o ator Mel Gibson, sobre
discos voadores que traçam figuras geométricas nas
plantações de diversos países. A recente
notícia, negada pelos militares americanos, de um ovni
nos arredores da Casa Branca, reforça o interesse pelo
filme;
- a estréia de Possessão, filme com Gwyneth Paltrow,
a nova namorada de Walter Salles, no papel principal;
- a estréia de Bend it like Beckham, que, como o título
indica, é um comédia futebolística;
- o retorno de Pavel Lounguine, de Taxi Blues, com O Novo Russo.
O Festival de Locarno assinala também o recesso do cinema
asiático, menos numeroso e de menor qualidade. Este ano,
a concorrência com Veneza, cujo diretor-interino teve só
quatro meses para a seleção, foi menor e Locarno
perdeu apenas um filme para os italianos. Como se sabe, o diretor
da Mostra de Veneza foi demitido pelo governo de direita de Silvio
Berlusconi, e substituído às pressas pelo ex-diretor
de Berlim, Moritz de Haldern.
MAL ESTAR DA JUVENTUDE É O TEMA PRINCIPAL
Para Irene Bignardi, diretora do Festival de Locarno, "o
que ressalta como tema principal dos filmes é o mal estar
da juventude atual. Tratam disso os filmes húngaro, francês,
argentino, para citar só alguns. Os jovens sofrem em geral
da incerteza, do que fazer, e para que, num mundo sem valores.
Não sabem como se situar, num mundo com guerras e onde
convivem imensas riquezas com profundas misérias"
Pergunta - Foi difícil se encontrar
bons filmes ao fazer a seleção?
Irene Bignardi - Sim, vê-se
centenas de filmes sem qualidade, mas se acaba encontrando coisas
boas. É preciso se ter muita paciência e coragem
para continuar fazendo a seleção, pois surgem filmes
realmente abaixo da crítica. Com a vulgarização
do cinema em conseqüência do surgimento do digital
e do vídeo, todo mundo se sente cineasta e por isso surgem
filmes terríveis! Mas como somos exigentes em Locarno,
procuramos ver o máximo possível, e finalmente encontramos
filmes preciosos.
Pergunta - Por que a América
latina esta pouco representada este ano?
Irene Bignardi - Se ela está
pouco representada é porque não nos propôs
boas escolhas, mas isso aconteceu também com outros continentes.
O que escolhemos é o melhor que achamos e isso se aplica
à Argentina, Brasil, Chile, Colômbia, etc, Não
havia grandes coisas. Não acredito que essa ausência
seja por serem destinados ao Festival de Veneza. Alguns filmes
sul-americanos foram para a mostra Cineastas do Presente porque
não tinham o formato exigido pela competição.
Foi também o caso dos filmes brasileiros enviados, mas
não escolhidos. No ano passado, quando estive na Argentina,
pensei que teria dificuldades de escolha, mas isso não
ocorreu, talvez também em conseqüência da tragédia
econômica desse país.
Pergunta - Sua crítica ao vídeo
é total ou há bons filmes nessa categoria?
Irene Bignardi - Há
bons filmes vídeo, que sabem explorar as oportunidades
permitidas pelo vídeo. Existem vídeos que tratam
os personagens de uma maneira que a câmera tradicional nunca
conseguirá fazer. Isso permite um outro tipo de relação,
inteligente e interessante.
É UM FESTIVAL MAIS RICO EM CONTEÚDO
Marco Solari, presidente do Festival de Locarno, considerado o
quarto no ranking mundial, e elevado à seleta categoria
A, da qual se beneficiam só uma dezena de festivais, afirma
que este ano, Locarno "é mais rico em conteúdo
e, ao mesmo tempo, em infra-estrutura com a ampliação
de suas salas de projeção".
Ao mesmo tempo, Solari qualifica de utópica a idéia
de alguns arquitetos de se cobrir uma das praças de Locarno,
a fim de se ter cinema ao ar livre mesmo com chuva. "Tem
havido uma média de três noites com chuva, nos últimos
festivais, vamos esperar que isso se mantenha e não aconteça
um desastre. Perde sua poesia, cada noite em que os espectadores
são obrigados a entrar num pavilhão fechado, em
lugar da liberdade da Piazza Grande, para fugir da chuva".

AMERICA DIDN'T OFFER US GOOD CHOICES", SAYS
THE FESTIVAL DIRECTOR
The
world premiere of the new film by the British Oliver
Parker - "The Importance of Being Earnest"
(picture) - based on Oscar Wilde, opened today the
55th Locarno International Film Festival, in Switzerland.
The projection - if it doesn't rain - will happen
on the main square, Piazza Grande, on a 300 m2 screen,
for a nine thousand sitting people audience. The director
and the actor Rupert Everett were guaranteed presences.
Three Brazilian filmmakers will be in Locarno - Kiko
Goifman, taking part in the video competition with
his documentary "33"; Eryk Rocha, presenting
the film "Rocha que Voa", homage to his
father, the filmmaker Glauber Rocha, in the parallel
showcase Critics Week; and Artur Omar, also a fine
artist, as a member of the jury of the video competition.
Other attractions on the Piazza Grande's screen:
- the premiere of the film "Signs", with
Mel Gibson, about flying saucers that leave geometric
figures on fields in several countries. The recent
news, denied by the American army, of a UFO close
to the White House, reinforces the interest on the
film;
- the premiere of "Possession", a film with
Gwyneth Paltrow, Walter Salles' new girlfriend, on
the leading role;
- the premiere of "Bend it like Beckham",
which, as the title says, is a comedy about football;
- the return of Pavel Lounguine, from "Taxi Blues",
with "Le Nouveau Russe".
Locarno Festival also signalizes the recess of Asian
cinema, with fewer titles and less quality. This year,
the competition with Venice, whose director had only
four months for the selection, was smaller, and Locarno
missed only one film for the Italians. As it is known,
Venice's director was fired by the right winged Silvio
Berlusconi's government, and substituted with urgency
by Berlin's ex-director, Moritz de Haldern.
THE DISCONTENTS OF YOUTH IS MAIN THEME
For Irene Bignardi, Locarno Festival's director, "what
stands out as the main theme of the films is the discontents
of youth nowadays. The Hungarian, French, Argentinean
films, just to list a few, deal with that. Young people
in general suffer with uncertainty, of what to do,
and what for, in a valueless world. They don't know
where to stand, in a world in war and where huge wealth
co-exists with deep misery."
JM - Was it hard to select
good films?
Irene Bignardi
- Yes, we see hundreds of no-quality films, but end
up by finding good things. It takes a lot of patience
and courage to keep doing the selection, for films
really below critics come up. With the vulgarization
of cinema and as a consequence of digital and video,
everyone thinks they can be filmmakers and that is
why terrible films appear! But as we are demanding
in Locarno, we try to see as many as possible, and
finally find precious movies.
JM - Why is Latin America
little represented this year?
Irene Bignardi -
If it is little represented it is because it didn't
offer us good choices, but it has already happened
to other continents. We chose what we found of best
and this applies to Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia,
etc. There wasn't great stuff. I don't believe this
absence is because they were set aside for Venice.
Some South American films are in Filmmakers of the
Present because they didn't have the format required
by the competition. It was also the case of the Brazilian
films that were sent, but not chosen. Last year, when
I was in Argentina, I thought I would have a hard
time choosing, but it didn't happen, maybe also as
a consequence of the economic tragedy in this country.
JM - Is your criticism to
video total or are there good films in this category?
Irene Bignardi -
There are good video films, that know how to explore
the opportunities of video. There are videos that
deal with the characters in ways that the traditional
camera will never be able to do. This allows another
kind of intelligent and interesting relation.
FESTIVAL HAS RICHER CONTENTS
Marco Solari, Locarno Festival's president, considered
to be the fourth in the world ranking, and elevated
to the selected A category, of which only ten festivals
benefit, states that this year, Locarno "has
richer contents and, at the same time, richer infrastructure
with the enlargement of its theaters".
At the same time, Solari qualifies as utopist the
idea by some architects of covering one of Locarno's
squares, so that there can be outdoor cinema even
in rainy evenings. "There has been a three rainy
evenings average at the last festivals, let's hope
this stays the same and that there isn't a disaster.
Each night the viewers have to enter a closed pavilion
to escape the rain, instead of the freedom at Piazza
Grande, misses the poetry."
