THE
PRINCE
UGO
GIORGETTI SPEAKS ABOUT MATTERS THAT INVOLVE
ALL OF US
I am very happy and proud that my film
has motivated a very rare attitude in national cinema,
and surely, even in national life, that is, a demonstration
of courage and straightforwardness that I have very
rarely seen. In a country where the rule is commitment,
where one constantly avoids taking sides and clearly
stating things, its stimulating and admirable
to see someone go out in public and let the cat out
of the bag.
The
defense of the film itself didnt surprise me
for the simple fact that it isnt the first time
you generously pronounce yourself on its behalf (the
texts final paragraphs are one of the critic
analysis on the film that gave me the most satisfaction).
What impressed me, though, other than that, were the
conclusions you made out of this sort of attitude.
Its completely true that it puts off the courage
to experiment and mines the viewers
identity, their own culture and reality. And
surely it is a mistake to think that we are
not affected by this sort of attack. We are
attacked indeed, and we must confess that, young or
old filmmakers. Not to confess that one is attacked
by such critics is stupid. Its as if I denied
having been attacked, after being hit on the head
by a rock! And its even worst if it regards
young filmmakers, yet a bit insecure.
Not
mentioning, of course, the devastating effects like
in the Embrafilmes case so well reminded by
you. We are, at this very moment, still trying to
create an institute that substitutes Embrafilmes and
no one mentions how it got extinct! And why!
I
repeat that it fills me with satisfaction the fact
that my film has motivated a manifestation of this
sort. And, mainly, that it was brought up by another
filmmaker and not by the established press. Though
recognizing that there are filmmakers also in the
official press, it is very important to us a display
that the matters that affect us are not isolated cases
nor should be treated that way. Most times, they are
matters that involve all of us.
Well,
one more time, thank you very much. And congratulations.
Not for defending the film, that might not deserve
it, but for the courage, more clearly, for the guts.
You are a guy who has the cinema in your soul.
Warm regards,
Ugo
