TO
BE AND TO HAVE
A
BREATH OF HUMANITY AND HOPE IN A TOUCHING
FILM ABOUT CHILD EDUCATION
An instant hit at its French Premiere on August 28,
the film “To be and to have”, by Nicolas
Philbert, mobilized all the educational community,
with sold out sessions full of students and teachers.
And that´s not all. It touched viewers of all
ages, with more than 800 thousand viewers on its first
week of exhibition.
“To
be and to have” brings to screen a lost-in-time
experience in child education, still practiced in
some communities in the countryside of France: a one-class-school,
with children from 4 to 11 years old. Director´s
Nicolas Philibert great merit, very much praised in
French critic reviews, is the talent of the small
film crew in not making themselves noticed in this
classroom in Saint-Étienne-sur-Usson (Puy-de
Dôme) for six months, from December 2000 to
June 2001
In
the film, the children´s emotions are always
on display. From their doubts to their difficulties
and enthusiasm, either in the classroom or among students,
with the moving master Georges Lopez, or at home with
their parents. Above all, we are moved by the dedication
of the teacher Georges Lopez, an example of humanity
and love for the children, that comes to us like a
breeze of hope towards the horrors of a world that
always makes children the most unfortunate victims.
Teacher Georges Lopez´ sweet tone of voice,
attentive, patient, caring and rigorous in the right
way, is one of the many marks of the film. As unbelievable
as it may seem, the viewer is the one who learns most
from this delicate experience.
“To
be and to have” will be one of the highlights
of the 26th São Paulo International Film Festival.
