LENINGRAD
COWBOYS
SCANDINAVIAN
ROCK BAND OPENS SÃO PAULO INT'L FILM
FESTIVAL
Just like in 2001, the 26th São Paulo International
Film Festival brings a live musical performance as
this year’s opening. After the concert by Emir
Kusturica &The No Smoking Orchestra last year,
now it is the Leningrad Cowboys´ turn, the amusing
rock group present in Aki Kaurismaki´s soundtracks
and protagonist of his feature film “Leningrad
Cowboys go to America” (1989), also present
in this year´s program.
Notorious in their homeland Finland (where the brands
of a beer, a vodka and a cell phone are named after
them), the Leningrad Cowboys entitle themselves as
“the world’s worst rock band”.
Incorporating ancient icons from the Russian Red Army
and adopting costumes based on the punk look, the
group members use gigantic toupees and long toed boots
as their trademark.
Their repertoire, to be checked by the audience in
shows scheduled for the coming 16th and 17th of October
at DirectTV Music Hall (São Paulo), include
spirited versions of classic rock songs, like “Yellow
Submarine” (Beatles), “Knocking On Heaven´s
Door”(Bob Dylan) and “Stairway to Heaven”(Led
Zeppelin).
The 26th São Paulo International Film Festival
will present the group’s complete filmography:
besides “Leningrad Cowboys Go To America”
the program includes the features “Leningrad
Cowboys Meet Moses”(1993) and “Total Balalaika
Show” (1994), as well as the shorts “These
Boots” (1992) and “Those Were The Days”
- all of them directed by Aki Kaurismaki - and also
“Absolutely Los Angeles” (by Mika Kaurismaki).
The band touring party coming to Brazil (and their
respective instruments) is:
Twist-Twist
- “Tractor” drums
Sakke - vocals and “space” guitar
Silu - bass
Tipe - lead vocal
Varre - guitar
Vesa - solo guitar
Pemo - trumpet
Mauri - keyboards and accordion
Linda & Elina - dance and vocals
Haka - special performance as “Ms. Galina Gulakova”
The
band´s discography include the following albums:

compositions like “Mardi Gras Ska” and
“Monkey Groove”;
*
Mongolian Barbeque, that includes versions of “Sweet
Home Alabama” (Lynyrd Skynyrd) and “There
Must Be An Angel” (Eurythmics)

for being tractor drivers as well.
