Silence é uma série de cinco documentários
decorrentes de um projeto do cineasta Steven Spielberg e confiados a renomados
cineastas, como o polonês Andrzej Wajda, o argentino Luis Puenzo,
o russo Pavel Chukhraj, o húngaro János Szász e o
tcheco Vojtech Jasny.
Os cinco
documentários se baseiam em depoimentos e imagens armazenados na
Survivors of the Shoah Visual History Foundation, instituição
criada em 1994 pelo cineasta Steven Spielberg para preservar as lembranças
dos sobreviventes do Holocausto.
A fundação luta ainda para que esse selvagem genocídio
não seja esquecido pelas atuais e próximas gerações
e para que o mundo venha a superar todo e qualquer tipo de preconceito,
intolerância e fanatismo.
Spielberg decidiu criar essa fundação impactado pelos depoimentos
que recolheu durante as filmagens de A Lista de Schindler
(1993). Atualmente, ela armazena depoimentos de mais de 50 mil sobreviventes
do Holocausto, recolhidos em 57 países e 32 línguas.
"A série
Broken Silence é um passo extremamente importante
na missão da Shoah Foudation de promover mundialmente uma educação
para a tolerância", disse Steven Spielberg.
A série foi produzida por James Moll, diretor premiado com um Oscar
por seu documentário The Last Days (1998). Cada
documentário foi realizado na língua original dos diretores
e dos sobreviventes e conta com legendas em inglês.

Silence consists of a series of five documentaries originated
by a Steven Spielberg's project and directed by film makers like Andrzej
Wajda from Poland, Argentinian Luis Puenzo, Russian Pavel Chukhraj, Hungarian
János Szász, and Vojtech Jasny from Czechoslovakia.
The five documentaries are based on statements and images on file in the
Survivors of the Shoah Visual History Foundation, established in 1994
by film maker Steven Spielberg to preserve the memory of the survivors
of the Holocaust. The foundation is determined that this savage genocide
shall not be forgotten by generations today and in the future, and that
the world will overcome any and every type of prejudice, intolerance,
and fanaticism.
Spielberg decided to start this foundation under the impact of the statements
that he had access to during the filming of Schindler's List
(1993). Today , the foundation has on file statements from over 50 thousand
survivors of the Holocaust, colleted from 57 countries, in 32 languages.
"The series Broken Silence is an extremely important
step forward in the mission on part of the Shoah Foundation to further
education towards tolerance worldwide", says Steven Spielberg.
The series was produced by James Moll, director, awarded an Oscar for
his documentary The Last Days (1998) . Each documentary
was made in the original language of the directors and of the survivors,
with sub-titles in English.
