21ST
ISTANBUL FILM FESTIVAL OPENS WITH HOMAGE TO CARLOS
SAURA
The
21st INTERNATIONAL ISTANBUL FILM FESTIVAL will open
this Friday April 12 evening paying homage to the
Spanish filmmaker Carlos Saura, one of the most important
personalities in his country who fought against general
Franco's fascist dictatorship. Besides the homage
to Saura for the whole of his works, Istanbul also
offers its public a complete retrospective of the
filmmaker who began his career in 1959 with "Los
golfos / The delinquents". The film was a rare
neo-realist manifest of Spanish cinema and was dedicated
to the poor communities in Madrid suburbs, in a strong
censorship and political persecution time.
At
the moment Carlos Saura is finishing his new film
"Buñuel y La Mesa del rey Salomón
/ Bunuel and the Table of King Solomon" a fantasy
about the start of Luis Buñuel's career with
surreal films with Salvador Dali and his connections
with poet Federico Garcia Lorca.
Istanbul
Film Festival goes on until April 28 with a rare showcase
of free-expression in the Turkish political-cultural
panorama with a 180 features selection. In the international
competition, Turkish cinema will be represented by
"Yazgi/Fate", an adaptation of the French
existentialist Albert Camus and Zeki Demirkubuz's
first film that will take part in the trilogy "Stories
About Darkness".
Istanbul
makes homage also to the actor Alain Delon and rescues
for its audience the memory of the Italian actor and
director, a master of neo-realism, Vittorio De Sica.
Another homage will be to the Russian pioneer Dziga
Vertov, with the projection of his magnificent "The
Man with a Movie Camera", with musical accompaniment
by the jazz band Cinematic Orchestra.
FROM
THE READERS
ALWAYS
GOOD TO KNOW...
Congratulations for 'Jornal da Mostra' nº 72.
It is always very good to know that people like Mohsen
Makhmalbaf are remembered and commented. Makhmalbaf
fascinated me with his book, written with such sensitivity,
and the Jornal da Mostra team touched me by dedicating
this edition to a great humanitarian.
I enjoy reading Jornal da Mostra, knowing the news
-this is already part of my routine - but better than
getting news about cinema, is becoming better human
beings.

CULTURAL
INFORMER
I
would like to congratulate the 'Jornal da Mostra'
team for the fabulous work they have been developing,
always bringing good information about the world of
cinema. Jornal, in this sense, has also a cultural
informer role, what is excellent in a society more
and more attracted by American movies. Congratulations
for the job!
