FESTIVAL
SOLVES MOVIE-LESS PROBLEM ON THE BEACH
Cannes
Festival has always confronted an embarrassing question
- the crowds of cinema fans that mobbed in front of the
festivals palace to see (or try to see) celebrities going
upstairs before the beginning of the official sessions.
The festivals palace is comfortable for the ones who are
accredited or have tickets for the sessions. For unofficial
movie fans the situation was quite embarrassing. The massacre
on the narrow two-way street in front of the palace, Croisette,
plus the police blocks for the exclusive official cars traffic,
seemed to be an unsolvable problem. The crowd would sometimes
make even walking complicated.
This
year Cannes seems to have found a solution for the movie-less
legions, and will inaugurate at this 55th edition a mega
outdoor project, with daily projections on Macé beach,
just by the movie theaters. The project 'Salle des Sables',
sand room, will innovate by installing the big screen founded
on the sea of Cannes bay.
The
Salle des Sables program on the first weekend will homage
the actor and filmmaker Jacques Tati. Thus, his films "Jour
de Fête", "Les Vacances de Monsieur Hulot"
and "Mon Oncle" will be shown. The beach will
be specially decorated, simulating old bathing cabins and
other items inspirited by Tati's films. Another film by
Tati - "Playtime", restored in its original 70
mm format will only be seen in the Festivals Palace.
The
second weekend will be reserved for a program by Lumière
Institute, showing a selection of short films in competition
and presenting homage to Billy Wilder. This is how the organization
solves a problem of frustration of a legion of movie fans
that used to adventure in the festival, coming from all
over the world, and going back home without seeing a single
film of the intense program.
FROM THE READERS
About
cinema and reality, I would like to remind of an excellent
film, that was shown at São Paulo IFF a few years
ago, "Seul contre tous" (by Gaspar Noé,
22th São Paulo IFF), which is perfect for understanding
the Le Pen phenomenon. Really profetic! I would very much
like to see it (again).
